August 2002
Dear Reader:
Welcome to August, one of our favorite months to dash outside with a book and relax. Wondering what to read? Read on for our August news. Also see news about a contest!
August Author of the Month: John Jakes
John Jakes won legions of fans with his Kent Family Chronicles and the North and South trilogy. Now Jakes presents Charleston, an epic novel which takes readers back in time to this historic southern city. From the 1720s through the Civil War, Jakes introduces the Bell family and recreates the passion, political turmoil, and bloodshed of these periods.
To celebrate the publication of Charleston, AuthorsOnTheWeb honors John Jakes as the August Author of the Month and presents "fast facts" about his career and personal life, trivia questions, and more.
Coming in September --- our Author of the Month will be Nicholas Sparks.
In case you missed it, our July Author of the month was Catherine Coulter. As one of America's most prolific Romance writers, Catherine Coulter has written about several historical periods in her vastly popular character-linked series books. Each year she promises --- and delivers --- her die-hard fans continuations of at least two of their favorite series, and in recent years she has begun to tackle the contemporary thriller/romance genre. Her newest book, Eleventh Hour, is the seventh installment in her FBI suspense series, but she plans to continue historical period romances as well. From Vikings to Victorians, Catherine has a novel for every interest.
To celebrate the publication of Hard Eight, AuthorsOnTheWeb honors Janet Evanovich as Author of the Month with "fast facts" about her career and personal life, trivia questions, and more. If you have not been introduced to Evanovich's sassy character we hope you'll pick up One for the Money, Two for the Dough, Three to Get Deadly, Four to Score, High Five, Hot Six, and Seven Up --- and start reading!

Great Author Websites:
Publishers' Weekly called Eric Van Lustbader's The Ring of Five Dragons a "richly detailed tapestry" with "complex plotting, fluid action writing and vivid descriptive passages." Now Lustbader is back with The Veil of a Thousand Tears, which continues the saga begun in The Ring of Five Dragons. Visit Lustbader's website to watch a video interview with the author and to read an exclusive bonus prologue of his acclaimed series. Reading guides, a FAQ, and screen savers are also available.
Congratulations to Terry Pratchett, who has won the prestigious 2001 Carnegie Award for The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, the first book for young readers set in Pratchett's popular Discworld series. Click here to read comments from the chair of this year's judging panel and from the author himself. Check out Pratchett's official website to find out more about the author.
Fans of young adult fantasy and horror should check out Neil Gaiman's Coraline, which arrived in bookstores this month. Kidsreads.com calls the book a "beautifully written dark fairy tale" and Publishers Weekly says Coraline is a "creepy tale likely to haunt young readers for many moons." Check out NeilGaiman.com for more information about the novel and Gaiman's other works.
Lorelei's Guiding Light reveals the secrets, triumphs, and tragedies of Lorelei Hills and Beth Raines, both of whom Beth Chamberlin portrays on television's longest running daytime show, Guiding Light. Only hints of Chamberlin's novel will be revealed on the television show --- the real story is told between the book's covers. The book coincides with Guiding Light's 50th anniversary on television. A video interview with Beth --- and Beth in character as Lorelei --- is available on the site, which also offers background on the actress, her Guiding Light roles, and her novel through book excerpts, video interviews, Q&As, character profiles, trivia questions, contests, and more.
Seventeen-year-old Nick McDonell makes his publishing debut with Twelve. Set in New York, the novel features a cast of teenage characters who face many of today's temptations: drugs, violence, money, and sex. Check out McDonell's official website to read an interview with the teenage author and to read an excerpt from his book. A tour schedule is also available.
